Drew Patrick is no stranger to “reboots."

Drew began working at Skidmore Studio 13 years ago, and while he appreciated working with his good friend who owned the company, he had an itch to start something on his own. Shortly after Drew told his friend that he was leaving to carve his own path, his friend suddenly and tragically passed away. With a new reality in front of him, Drew rebooted his career plans and took over Skidmore.

Ever since that moment, Drew’s personal and professional life have been full of curveballs, but he’s done the most important thing that a leader can do: he’s stayed in the game. Listen as Drew walks us through his journey of courage, compassion and resilience.

Presentation

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

One Campus Martius - Founders & CEO's

While many companies still struggle to retain their current employees, Service Express has been on a growth spurt. As a matter of fact, during the pandemic, they added 250 new employees! Amidst this exciting development, the leadership team had to take a hard look at how to maintain their culture amongst this rapid expansion.

Service Express’ long-time commitment to its people has resulted in a single core value: to cultivate a culture of growth that allows their people to achieve their personal, professional, and financial goals.

Get excited for this comprehensive look at how one company is scaling with intention. Bill and Gretchen will talk all about how implementing processes around numbers, while keeping the focus on people, drives a successful, sustainable culture.

  • How Service Express tracks metrics using their customized system called SR5
  • How Sales and Marketing come together for a harmonious and intertwined process

Building Culture Through "Connected Work"
John Burns

Presentation

2:30 PM - 3:30 PM

One Campus Martius - Founders & CEO's

Imagine how great your team would be if you were able to open your recruiting to the best people in every state, and have them perform even better than if they were in the office every day. While it sounds too good to be true, new technologies and a very intentional focus on a “connected culture” have made it work for John Burns Real Estate Consulting.

Prior to the pandemic, roughly half of John’s employees worked remotely and they developed tools and tricks through many lessons learned. In April 2020, as the Great Resignation started, the firm doubled down on the strategy, resulting in a 50% increase in talented people and top percentile scores in both the Gallup Employee Engagement survey and Great Place to Work certification.

John will talk about what he likes to call “connected work”, how they made the remote setup work, and how their culture is stronger than ever. Even if you have zero intent of allowing remote workers, you will learn some amazing tips for excellent communication, training and collaboration.

Takeaways include:

  • How to establish compassionate, candid and clear communication tools prior to and during onboarding
  • How to attract talented people, from interns to executives, who will reward you for offering flexibility
  • How to train and grow the careers of those who work remotely
  • A unique JBREC leadership structure that is inclusive and designed to identify and embrace change

Beth Smith

Strong Back, Open Heart
Beth A. Smith

Long Story Short

As the CEO of StickerGiant, Beth Smith has seen the company through many changes recently - not just rapid growth and a change in ownership, but also the pandemic and a devastating local fire. For Beth, their culture is constantly rebooting.

Sometimes as leaders, the biggest step in addressing culture is to voice aloud that things are challenging, and to seek the counsel of your employees. Beth will take us through the StickerGiant journey of dynamic change, along with how the practice of mindfulness has helped them become a more trusting and attentive leader.

Throwing Calculated Risk to the Wind
Beth Spiegel

Long Story Short

3:30 PM - 4:00 PM

One Campus Martius - Emerging Leaders

On paper, Beth Spiegel is a risk-taker with an adventurous life: breaking free from her insular small town upbringing, going to a college that required study abroad, and even moving her family to Belize with no jobs lined up. But in actuality, these were all calculated decisions. Until she quit her job last year.

With honesty and vulnerability, Beth will walk us through the build up to, and her “why”, for leaving the company she had spent nearly a decade with. Even though she admits to going about the process the wrong way at times – and has practical tips for us to learn from her mistakes – Beth ultimately trusted her gut, and it led her on to her latest adventure. Whether you’ve toyed with the idea of leaving your company, or want to heighten your awareness of employees who may feel this way, Beth will share useful insights so that both parties can benefit, no matter the outcome.

Now, we will all come back together to wrap up Day 1!

Setting the tone for the final day of the Small Giants Community Summit.

Mel Gravely

Dear Small Giants Friends
Mel Gravely

Keynote

9:15 AM - 10:00 AM

One Campus Martius

Mel Gravely, CEO of TriVersity Construction, has built a successful business and is an active civic leader. He admits that he avoided engaging in the often-thorny conversations about race. He preferred to let his performance do the talking. But in the wake of the civil unrest, the quality of the dialogue about race continued to degrade. “People seemed to be more interested in lobbing labels than talking, hearing, and working together to solve challenges.”

Mel believed the perspective of a business and civic leader was missing. The outcome is his latest book, Dear White Friend: The Realities of Race, the Power of Relationships and Our Path to Equity. Mel’s approach to this challenging topic is forthright yet collegial; thought-provoking and at the same time judgment-free.

Topics such as race, which may have felt taboo to discuss in a business setting, are now an essential conversation for our collective progress. This open-hearted discussion is a call to action, and a blueprint for how as Small Giants leaders, we can be positive change makers.

Takeaways include:

  • A look at our country’s current imbalanced systems, and how we got here
  • The multi-faceted importance of inclusion
  • Concrete, actionable ways we can be intentional about making things better

Competing for talent these days is really hard, and there is no relief on the horizon. Do we need to match or beat other offers that include higher compensation or flashier bonuses?

Takeaways include:

  • The monetary benefits that you shouldn’t skimp on
  • Creative, budget-friendly perks
  • How to make your company culture a benefit in and of itself

Andrew Barry

Interactive Session

2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

One Campus Martius - Emerging Leaders

Most of us have witnessed how employees have used the time during the pandemic to evaluate what is most important to them. They are challenging us to deliver knowledge and skills well beyond what is required to do the job. They want training and development more than ever, and we need to be listening.

Now is the perfect time to do a double take on your learning culture. Andrew will explain how learning is not merely the transfer of information, but the transforming of oneself. He’ll walk us through his system of Cohort Learning Experiences (CLX) and his VASE framework, which can systematize the learning experience in a cross-functional community environment. By the end of this session, you’ll have the tools to produce sustainable and effective teams of lifelong learners.

 Takeaways include:
  • Assessing your current learning culture
  • Understanding the adjustments to be made and what teaching elements are important to your organization
  • Deciding who to involve in the process
